1. Can I be my own Registered Agent in North Carolina?
Yes, under NC General Statutes § 55D-30, an individual resident of North Carolina whose business office is identical to the registered office can serve as the registered agent. However, doing so requires your name and address to become permanent public record, exposing you to data aggregators and process servers at your home or office. Furthermore, you must be consistently available during regular business hours to accept service of process.
2. What happens if I don't have a Registered Agent?
Failure to maintain a registered agent violates state law. The Secretary of State will send a notice of grounds for administrative dissolution. If not remedied within 60 days, your entity will be administratively dissolved (for domestic entities) or your certificate of authority will be revoked (for foreign entities). This means you lose your liability protection and legal standing to operate in NC.
3. What forms do I need to change my Registered Agent?
To change your agent, you must file a Statement of Change of Registered Office and/or Registered Agent (Form BE-06). You cannot simply update this on your annual report if the change happens mid-year. The statutory filing fee for this form is $5.00.
4. Do you forward mail and legal documents immediately?

5. Can I use a P.O. Box as my registered office address?
